Philip Bell
Steel Manufacturers Association /
President
Philip K. Bell is President of the Washington, D.C. based Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA). SMA is the largest steel industry trade association in the United States, representing North American Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel producers and rolling mills. EAF steelmakers account for almost 70 percent of U.S. steel production using innovative, 21st century production processes that are efficient and sustainable. Through EAF steel production, more steel is recycled than aluminum, paper and plastic combined. EAF steelmakers produce steel with up to 75 percent less carbon emissions. Prior to joining the SMA in 2013, Mr. Bell served as Director of External Communications and Public Affairs for Gerdau North America. He is a 30-year industry veteran, who gained an interest in the steel industry while serving as a production and maintenance supervisor at Elementis Chromium in Corpus Christi, Texas during the 1980s. He has held executive level positions in operations, human resources and public affairs with Gerdau, the SGL Carbon Group, Qualitech Steel Corporation and Elementis Chromium. Mr. Bell currently serves on the U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Advisory Committee on Steel (ITAC 7), advising the Secretary of Commerce and United States Trade Representative on trade policy, trade agreements, and other trade related matters that benefit U.S. businesses, workers, and the economy. Mr. Bell represents EAF steel producers as part of the U.S. industry delegation to the OECD Steel Committee. He is also a member of the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) and is on the board of directors of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Council of Manufacturing Associations (CMA). Mr. Bell has shared ideas about the steel industry around the globe including conferences sponsored by the Chinese International Steel Association (CISA), FastMarkets AMM, S&P Global Platts, Steel Market Update, and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI)
